It seems that everyone is jumping on the train of thrifting old furniture pieces and giving them new life - myself included! There's just something really awesome about scoring a beautiful, old, solid piece for $25 - it gives me all the feels! So I wanted to share a little trick with you all that I have discovered along the way. I used to be an avid furniture painter. I painted e v e r y t h i n g ! However, more recently I have been loving mid century pieces. They just don't make furniture the way that they used to and I would hate to cover up the beauty of these pieces with paint. I scored one amazing piece (for free!) from my mother in law. This particular one used to be her parents' from when they first got married and the color on it was perfect! I didn't want to sand it and lose that perfect color, but it did have some scratches from over the years that I obviously wanted to repair. What I have found is that if you give the wood a good cleaning with equal parts white vinegar and olive oil, it will condition the wood and hide the scratches! For this dresser I used 1/2 c of each mixed together and just a cleaning cloth to wipe it down. The vinegar is a natural cleaning agent and the olive oil will condition the wood, as I mentioned earlier. Make sure you squeeze out all of the excess liquid so that you don't damage the wood and get some swelling. Once you clean it, just let it dry and you'll be amazed at how much less those scratches appear!
