As I mentioned in my last blog about our dining room table, I have been slightly obsessed with Scandinavian style recently! I find myself constantly looking for new things to add to my home and sharing my favorite ideas on Pinterest or with a friend of mine who is equally obsessed! 😆 As this style is growing in popularity I wanted to share 10 ways to add Scandinavian style to your own home. It blends with a multitude of styles, so you can add bits and pieces to the style that you currently have! 1. Muted ColorsScandinavian design is very muted with crisp white, light grays and light beige as the primary colors. Layer these in multiple tones to add interest to the room. It's amazing how much bigger a room will feel with a light color scheme! 2. Natural WoodNatural wood is clean, light and adds a bit of interest with the texture of the natural grain. Whether it be the frame on an arm chair, a sideboard or a coffee table, the natural wood will make a great addition to your Scandinavian inspired design! I love this natural wood bookshelf with the midcentury legs and little cubby holes! 3. Less is MoreLess is more when it comes to Scandi style. It's somewhat of a minimalist design with each piece serving a practical purpose. Your home doesn't need to feel empty to obtain this, rather more functional and with less clutter. Think clean lines for your furniture and cabinetry, one or two large paintings or framed posters instead of a gallery wall and a house plant instead of an array of knick knacks. 4. TextureWith the main color scheme being muted, Scandinavian style uses texture to add interest to the room. Wicker baskets, woven rugs, faux fur and knitted blankets are all ways to add texture to your space. If you're feeling really bold try layering a couple of different patterned rugs on top of each other for added appeal! 5. Natural ElementsWhen adding the finishing touches to your space, use natural elements to achieve the Scandinavian style. Use sturdy branches for hooks, picture frames or even a table centerpiece. Fresh green plants like ivy, aloe, and cactus bring color and life to the room. For a larger plant some of my favorites are a rubber plant, fiddle leaf fig and a split leaf philodendron. These plants make a bold statement in your room. A bonus to having plants in your home is that they create a better air quality for you and your family! ** If you have pets, check to be sure the plant that you choose is safe for animals. 6. Light Wood FloorsYou will almost never see carpeting in a Scandinavian style home. Instead you'll find beautiful hardwoods floors that you can add rugs to for added warmth. If adding new hardwood to your home is out of reach, there other great options that are more budget friendly like laminate or luxury vinyl! This type of flooring will bring a little something to the muted colors and compliment the other natural elements of the room. 7. Eames Style ChairsFun fact: I'm so obsessed with this style of chair and it's a must have if you're trying to achieve that Scandinavian look! It was super popular in the 60's and has made a real comeback. You can get these chairs in different colors and design. From dining chairs, to arm chairs to rocking chairs this chair is super versatile. I used them for my dining chairs and paired them with a reclaimed wood table. The mix of materials really works! 8. Low Profile FurnitureChoose low profile furniture. Big, over sized pieces are a thing of the past. Mid century style furniture works really well here. It has clean lines and similar fabrics as those you would find in a Scandinavian style home. Again, this style is meant to feel minimal and practical not big and flashy. 9. Big Bright WindowsScandinavian countries don't see daylight for very long with having long winters and so little daylight. So having big, bright windows is must in order to let that light shine in while it has the chance! For window covering you can use a simple drape, sheers or even a woven textured roman shade for when you want a little privacy. 10. Tepees, Polka Dots and Floor BedsWhen designing your home, you can't leave the kiddies out! For your kids space, whether it's their bedroom or playroom a fun wall that's white with little black polka dots (or other shapes) is a must! Tents and teepees are so fun plus can be used as a reading nook. When it comes to kids, Scandinavian styles use a lot of Montessori techniques. So, things should be lower and more accessible to kids in order to learn, play and discover at their own pace. This is why floor beds and lower bookshelves are ideal for a kids Scandinavian space. There you have it! 10 ways to add Scandinavian style to your own home. I hope you've found this helpful and that you're able to use this in your own design.
